Sui Network Hit by Dual Outages After Problematic v1.72 Upgrade
The Sui blockchain suffered two crippling outages within 48 hours following its v1.72 upgrade, exposing vulnerabilities in its gas fee architecture. Network validators twice failed to achieve consensus during epoch transitions, freezing transaction finality across the ecosystem.
Initial downtime lasted nearly six hours on May 28 as developers scrambled to deploy a patch for the Address Balances feature that clashed with existing gas accounting logic. A second collapse occurred during the next epoch transition, confirming the temporary fix merely treated symptoms rather than solving the root cause.
The incidents mark the first major stability crisis for Sui since its mainnet launch, occurring during peak DeFi activity hours. Engineers have rolled back the upgrade while auditing the interaction between validator voting mechanisms and gas fee distribution.
